Bail Denied for NJ Man Charged in Former Girlfriend's Slaying

A New Jersey man who allegedly killed his former girlfriend by firing a shotgun through her front door will remain jailed until his trial.

A judge on Wednesday denied bail for Clinton Degroat, who faces murder and weapons charges in the death of 38-year-old Nicole Sierra.

The judge noted the 38-year-old Ringwood man has no criminal record, but said she couldn't discount the possibility that he might threaten witnesses.

Passaic County prosecutors say Degroat came to Sierra's Ringwood home on March 8 and got into an altercation with another man. Degroat left and returned with a shotgun that prosecutors say he fired through the glass door.

Degroat's lawyer sought to have him released with monitoring conditions. She called the shooting an isolated incident caused by him "acting under passion provocation."
