A Huntington bagel shop owner waved to Hipolito Rubio just seconds after murdering his wife of 20 years, Rubio, a baker in the store, testified in court Thursday.
Robert Anderson, owner of the store, is on trial for second-degree murder. He is accused of shooting his wife – once in the side and four times in the head – over messy divorce proceedings, according to Newsday.
Anderson’s wife, Ann, co-owned and ran the bagel shop in Huntington. The couple had four children, and Ann was working to support them.
But all that ended in late May, when Robert allegedly stormed into the store and murdered his wife with a .22 caliber revolver that authorities later recovered in pieces from two storm drains near the bagel shop.
Rubio testified that he showed up at work on the morning of the murder just like he would on any other day. Ann got to work to open up just after 5 a.m. and soon after, Rubio heard a noise “like something had fallen,” according to Newsday. Then he heard more bangs, this time ones that sounded like gunfire, and he moved out from behind the oven and looked to the front of the store. That’s when he said Robert Anderson waved at him before ducking out the front door, and Rubio knew Ann was dead.
