Police Looking for NYC Family After Baby Is Found Locked in Hotel Safe Near Niagara Falls

Police are searching for a Brooklyn couple after workers at a Niagara Falls hotel found a baby locked inside a room safe Tuesday.

Police tell area media the infant's parents alerted staff the baby was stuck in the safe in a Howard Johnson hotel on the Canadian side of the waterfall.

A maintenance worker went to the room and freed the crying child. The parents then took the child and left before police arrived.

Authorities say they're trying to find the family to determine the child's well-being.

Police say it's possible the baby locked itself in the safe, but a language barrier prevented hotel staff from finding out more before the family left.

"At this point it could be a preventable accident," Niagara Regional Police Det. Amanda Sanders said. "But that's why we want to reach the family, to find out what happened and make sure the baby is OK."

Police say that the parents were thought to be driving a van with New Jersey license plates.
