Police Arrest 16-Year-Old in Stabbings of Two Newark Kids

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of a 15-year-old boy and the stabbing his younger brother in New Jersey.

Essex County prosecutors say the unnamed teen stabbed Elijah Alvarez and his 11-year-old brother after breaking into their home on Park Avenue in Newark on Tuesday.

Alvarez died from his injuries and and said the younger victim was expected to survive. Both of them attend Barringer High School but it's unclear whether the juvenile suspect knew the brothers.

A witness said he saw the youngest of the victims covered in blood and tried to help him.

According to the witness, the boy was barefoot and yelling "I don't want to die." The boy allegedly also said his brother was stabbed five times.

In a statement, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka siad: "Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims’ family and the community, and for a speedy recovery of the younger brother."

The prosecutor's office is expected to try the suspect as an adult, officials said in a statement. The teen was charged with felony murder, attempted murder, burglary, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
