Man Abducts Daughter, Tries to Snatch Son From NJ Day Care: Police

A father snatched his 4-year-old daughter and tried to abduct his son at gunpoint as the children's mother dropped him off at a New Jersey day care center, according to authorities.

Police said Kareem Dawson took his 4-year-old daughter from a location in Inglewood, then drove to his son's day care center in Maplewood on Wednesday morning.

When he got there, authorities said the 30-yer-old attacked the mother of his children after she dropped off their son. He followed her to her car, police said, and pulled her out of the vehicle and slammed her to the ground. Witnesses at the scene said the man had a gun at the time.

Afterward, he left with his daughter as the woman ran back into the day care to get help.

Police then tracked him and his daughter down about 18 miles away, in Woodbridge Township, where he surrendered to police. Police found a gun in the man's trunk, and the girl was unharmed when officers got on scene.

It's not clear what, if any, charges the man will face; he was being questioned by detectives as of Wednesday evening.

The girl has been returned to her mother, authorities said. The mother suffered minor injuries but refused medical attention.
