2 Rescued from Burning Yonkers Apartment in Critical Condition: Officials

About 40 firefighters spent an hour battling high winds and intense flames as they worked to knock down a fire inside a large Yonkers apartment complex Friday morning.

They also had to rescue two people trapped inside the burning fourth-floor apartment.

"There was a little panic from the residents, not knowing where the fire was coming from, not knowing where the smoke was coming from," said James Russell, who lives on the seventh floor.

Russell said he began noticing smoke coming from the apartment below him at about 9 a.m.

Fireifghters contained the fire to the fourth-floor unit, and a man and a woman pulled from the apartment are in critical condition, Yonkers fire officials say. In total, five residents and three firefighters were injured.

The cause remains undetermined.
