Taxi Crashes into Greenwich Village Staples Store, 8 Injured

Police say the taxi driver was cut off by another vehicle and lost control, first hitting a man on a bicycle and then crashing into the store

Eight people were hurt when a yellow taxi cab flew into a Staples store in Greenwich Village Sunday afternoon, smashing through a window and landing partly inside the building.

Police say the taxi driver was cut off by another vehicle and lost control, first hitting a man on a bicycle and then crashing into the store.

"All of a sudden there was a huge explosion, everything went flying," said Anthony Rubino, who was inside making a purchase when the cab crashed though the store's window.

"People hit the floor," added Rubino, who said flying glass struck him. "I got up and I yelled, 'Everybody get back,' because we were so scared."

Eight people sustained minor injuries, including the cab driver, his two passengers and the cyclist, fire officials said. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital with cuts and scrapes.

Police are investigating, but don't expect any charges to be filed.
