Wounded NJ Baby Recovering, Remains Hospitalized

A New Jersey baby struck in the face by a stray bullet while sitting in his family's parked car has undergone surgery and is expected to recover fully, his family said Sunday.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Jersey City. Authorities are still trying to determine what led to the gunfire.

Mina Beshay was sitting in the backseat when a gunshot shattered a window and struck the 18-month-old. His 5-year-old sister and their father were also in the vehicle but weren't injured.

The boy underwent surgery Saturday night to remove a piece of a bullet and glass from his face. He remained hospitalized Sunday.

No arrests have been made.

The shooting has left the family dismayed by street violence in Jersey City. Michael Beshay, the boy's father, called on the mayor to take measure to end the violence.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop responded that the city will "continue to hire additional officers and deploy more officers on foot patrols, but the challenge is daunting without larger changes to the overall system, such as restricting access to guns by criminals, more witnesses willing to testify and breaking the cycle of criminals returning to the street quickly after violent crimes."
