Police say a 59-year-old woman has died after she was hit by an oil truck while crossing the street near a Bronx expressway.
The victim was crossing the street at East 138th Street and Bruckner Boulevard in Mott Haven around noon Thursday, FDNY officials said.
Both police and a witness told News 4 the walk signal had ended and traffic was moving as she crossed.
"She tried to beat the light, but she didn't have the light," said Sophie Texeira, who tried to save the victim's life. "She went to cross the street, the truck hit her very hard and she went under the truck."
Shortly after, an oil truck slammed into her near the Bruckner Expressway.
The truck driver stayed at the scene and called 911. The woman later died at Lincoln Hospital.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating, police said.
