Long Island Woman Gets Prison for Scamming Employers Out of Prescriptions, $100K

A woman who wrote more than 30 fraudulent prescriptions for narcotics and anti-anxiety pills while working at a doctor's office, then stole more than $100,000 from her next company will spend the next three to six years behind bars.

Yessina Alongi, 37, pleaded guilty to grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument in October and was sentenced Wednesday to the prison term, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas.

"Every corner of Nassau County has felt the impact of the opioid epidemic and the misuse of prescription pills," Singas said. "I'm grateful to the Nassau County Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and our prosecutors for stopping this woman’s unscrupulous activities."

Alongi worked at the doctor's office for four months this year. Prosecutors said that during that time she illegally wrote more than 30 prescriptions for various drugs including hydrocodone, Xanax and Valium. She had them filled at a local pharmacy and told the pharmacist that she was a nurse picking them up for elderly patients.

She left the doctor's office in June and began working as a bookkeeper for a Freeport window company, according to prosecutors. While there, she stole a checkbook and wrote $109,332 in checks and cashed them at a check-cashing business.

Alongi's attorney declined to comment on the guilty plea.
