Authorities say a woman sitting in a parked car was killed and another woman was wounded when gunfire erupted on a Newark street.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said the women were shot just before 11 p.m. Monday.

Twenty-year-old Kiamesha Minton of Newark, who was inside the vehicle, was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later. The other woman, whose name was not disclosed, was treated at the hospital and later released.

It was not clear if the wounded woman was also in the vehicle when the gunfire erupted. Authorities have not said how many assailants may have been involved or what type of weapon was used.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.
