A woman has been awarded more than $500,000 after she was injured falling in the gap between a platform and a rail car at a suburban New York train station.
State Supreme Court Justice Andrew O'Rourke found the Metro-North Rail Road responsible for Karen McIlvenny's 2003 fall at the Brewster station. The woman's attorney says she suffered "permanent injuries."
Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said the rail road may appeal. She said, "People have to be responsible for watching their step."
McIlvenny's attorney said his client was trying to board a train on Dec. 8, when she slipped into the gap.
McIlvenny said she hopes the rail road will make changes so that no one else will have to suffer. The justice said McIlvenny should get $518,000.
