Woman Fatally Struck by Commuter Bus in New Jersey

An elderly woman was hit and killed by a Port Authority-bound commuter bus in New Jersey as it was making a left turn Thursday morning, police said.

Eighty-two-year-old Dilma Khan was on Harrison Avenue in West Orange at about 10 a.m. Thursday when she was fatally struck by a no. 66 DeCamp commuter bus, authorities said.

A student at the Mount Caramel Guild Academy saw the accident unfold from his third-floor classroom.

"I looked out the window and I saw a bus hit a lady, and the walker flew across the street," said 10th-grader Izzy Bartley.

Regular riders say they can understand how the accident could happen.

"It's a very wide turn, and it's hard for that bus to make the turn," said Ernestine Patterson. "I always said when I see the bus turning how dangerous it is for someone because if you don't see it, it comes fast and the light turns. Depending on your age, you probably can't move as fast, and unfortunately that's probably what happened."

The Essex County prosecutor's office is now investigating the death, police said.
