A fire ripped through a three-story Brooklyn home early Sunday, killing a woman and hospitalizing a man who attempted to rescue her, authorities said.
Maria Henry, 49, died of smoke inhalation in the fire at 216 E. 89th St., which started at about 3 a.m., police said.
Neighbors told NBC 4 New York that a 65-year-old male relative attempted to rescue Henry. He was overcome by smoke and taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was treated for for smoke inhalation. He was listed in stable condition..
More than 100 firefighters responded to the fire in the Flatbush neighborhood, which rose to the top of the structure.
Two families lived in the house.No other injures were reported.
The cause is under investigation.
