Woman Critically Hurt After Jumping From Van Fleeing Police: Officials

A woman was critically injured when she jumped from an illegal dollar van in Queens as the driver was allegedly trying to flee police, authorities said.

The woman was a passenger inside the van when police attempted to pull the driver over Sunday afternoon on Archer Avenue in Jamaica. The driver allegedly stepped on the gas when police approached, and the woman jumped out of the van, authorities said.

The 22-year-old driver of the van eventually pulled over and tried fleeing on foot, but was apprehended near Foch Boulevard, according to officials.

He was charged with resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operator and obstructing governmental administration, among other crimes. The Brooklyn man is expected to be arraigned Monday..

The woman was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition. It wasn't immediately clear why she jumped.

Dollar vans are unregulated vehicles that offer cheap rides to people in neighborhoods that are generally under-served by taxis and livery cabs.
