Woman Kidnapped NJ Baby, Found and Arrested on Long Island: Prosecutors

A 20-year-old was arrested on Long Island Wednesday after she allegedly kidnapped an infant from a New Jersey home, police said.

The woman, Christiana Fitzpatrick of Chicago, was supposed to be watching the child of a friend in East Orange, New Jersey, prosecutors said. When the mother of the baby returned home at about 2:30 a.m., both the baby and Fitzpatrick were missing.

The mother tried calling Fitzpatrick repeatedly to try to get her to return with the child, according to prosecutors. When Fitzpatrick refused, the mother called police at about 5:45 a.m.

East Orange Police, U.S. Marshals, New Jersey State Police, Nassau County Police and West Hempstead Police all responded, and located Fitzpatrick in West Hempstead, where she was arrested.

The woman was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment and interfering with custody.

She was jailed on $300,000 bail and awaiting extradition back to New Jersey from New York, according to prosecutors. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

The baby appeared to be fine but he was transported to the hospital to be evaluated as a precaution.
