An 80-year-old woman has lost her Long Island home after a blaze started by a Christmas tree tore through her house.
The woman is unhurt after fleeing her Syosset home on Nevada Street. Police said about 70 firefighters and six trucks were called to help put out the fire on Tuesday. They said the house was destroyed.
The woman was in her kitchen about 5:15 p.m. when she heard a sizzling sound coming from the tree in the living room. She ran from the house when she saw smoke, according to police.
The fire is under investigation.
