Downed Wires Strand NJ Transit Passengers, Delay Service

A commuter train became entangled in damaged overhead wires Friday, stranding about 100 passengers for more than two hours and causing delays for hundreds of other rail riders along Amtrak's busy Northeast Corridor.

A New Jersey Transit train headed to Trenton from New York's Penn Station got stuck east of Metropark station around 7 a.m., NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll said.

Rail service out of New York City was suspended for about 90 minutes because the wires covered three of the four tracks in the area.

Amtrak trains faced delays of up to an hour, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

The passengers on the disabled train were transferred to another train after 9 a.m., NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said.

NJ Transit passengers faced residual delays on the Northeast Corridor throughout the morning.

NJ Transit was moving crews and equipment into position and expected a normal evening commute home, Stessel said.
