Flag Bandit Strikes on Fourth of July

The NYPD released surveillance video of the man approaching a home and grabbing the flag off a pole

The Fourth of July holiday apparently prompted an unusual petit larceny spree in one Brooklyn neighborhood where a man snatched seven American flags from homes, according to police.

The NYPD released surveillance video of the man approaching a home and grabbing the flag off a pole. Police said he wore blue denim shorts, a bandanna and two backpacks, and rode away on a bicycle.

The string of thefts took place at around 5:30 a.m. in Windsor Terrace, in the area around Sherman Street and 10th Avenue.

Karen Burke Abruzzese's parents house was one of the properties targeted by the thief.

"We were disgusted by the act, especially on the Fourth of July, of all days,” said Karen Burke Abruzzese. “On any day, but especially the most patriotic day--America's birthday? It’s horrible."
