15-Foot Whale Carcass Washes Up on Long Island Beach

There were no signs of trauma

A dead 15-foot whale washed up on a Long Island beach over the weekend, officials say.

The adult female pilot whale was found at about 2 p.m. Sunday east of Coopers Beach in Southampton, officials from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation say.

A necropsy found no signs of trauma; a cause of death was still being determined.

Rob DiGiovanni, director and senior biologist at the Riverhead Foundation, said it's not abnormal for a pilot whale to be found on the beach but it's not a frequent occurrence.
