Westchester Driver Pleads Guilty in Double Fatal Motorcycle Crash

A 24-year-old Westchester County man has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide for running over two motorcyclists on the Thruway while he was intoxicated and texting his girlfriend.

Luis Munoz entered the plea in Orange County Court on Thursday. Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of 6 to 18 years when Munoz is sentenced on Nov. 8.

Prosecutors have said Munoz had at least seven beers before getting in his car around 11:30 p.m. on June 1. Driving north on the Thruway, he lost control of the vehicle while texting and veered into a safety area, where he struck the motorcyclists.

The victims were 25-year-old Melissa Rupa of Mineola and 23-year-old Rafaelito DeJesus of Valley Stream. They died at the scene and Munoz drove off. He was arrested hours later.
