Despite the nation-wide warnings of Salmonella-laced peanut butter, at the sandwich shop Peanut Butter & Co. in the West Village, people still happily munch on sandwiches with names like "Ants on a Log", The Fluffernutter®, and this week's special, Crunch Time & Pumpkin Butter. Their peanut butter is completely fine, the store's president Lee Zalben has been telling people throughout the past week.
City Room took a look at the situation yesterday, and learned that it was only affected industrial peanut butter, which they note "is used in bulk food service and products." So peanut butter sold in stores, or at Peanut Butter Co. in the West Village, is still completely safe and utterly delicious. But that didn't stop ABC News from an unattended swipe at the company when it aired "a shot of a Peanut Butter & Co. jar that was supposed to be cut out," in archival footage used for their coverage of the story.
But, "Since then," the Times notes, "ABC killed the footage and the affiliates also broadcast clarifications." Just in case any of their customers are confused, Peanut Butter & Co. published an explanation on their website, saying, "Peanut Butter & Co. products ARE NOT affected by this recall...Should you have any additional questions please contact our customer service line at 1-866-ILOVEPB." It's still OK to love peanut butter, just don't go buying industrial barrels of the stuff quite yet.
