Weight Watchers Recalls Popular Frozen Dessert Over Listeria Concerns

What to Know

  • Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children and the elderly
  • There have been no consumer complaints or reports of illness related to this issue to date
  • Weight Watchers said it implemented the recall out of an abundance of caution

Weight Watchers is recalling one of its popular frozen desserts over concerns about possible Listeria contamination, which can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children and the elderly.

The company that supplies cookie dough for the brand's "Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae" reported positive test results for Listeria, Weight Watchers said.

There haven't been any reports of illness, but about 100,000 cases of the product, shipped to retailers across the U.S., could be contaminated. Weight Watchers said it implemented the voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection.
