Lingering storms are clearing out of the area after heavy downpours pounded the region Tuesday, causing transit and airport delays and localized flooding.
The worst wet weather passed out of the region before noon, and the National Weather Service canceled flash flood watches for New York City and the rest of the tri-state at about 11 a.m. A second cluster of gusty thunderstorms passed through the area in the late afternoon and evening.
Most spots across the region got over an inch of rain. The rain was a welcome respite for Long Island, where meteorologists say a moderate drought is taking place, though it caused localized flooding. Trains on the Long Island Rail Road were delayed by as much as 20 minutes on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches in both directions because of high water conditions east of Westbury Station, the railroad said.
All three of the region's airports saw delays as well.
The rest of the week looks dry, warm and less humid, Storm Team 4 says. Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 90s by Saturday.
