Heat Wave! Temps Hit 90s for 3rd Straight Day in Parts of Tri-State

It's a great beach weekend, but if you're headed to the shore make sure to bring plenty of water

Temperatures hit the 90 degree mark for the third straight day in parts of New York and New Jersey Saturday, making it the first official heat wave of the year for those areas.

Traditionally, a heat wave is considered three consecutive days of 90 degree temps or higher.

Temperatures peaked at 90 degrees in Central Park and 92 degrees in Newark, N.J., Saturday afternoon after hitting similar sweltering numbers Thursday and Friday. The mercury crept up to about 89 degrees at LaGuardia Airport and 87 degrees in parts of southern Connecticut before leveling off.

Warm temperatures return Sunday, though they aren't expected to crack the 90 degree mark.

A cold front will trigger some heavy thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday, making way for cooler, more comfortable temperatures in the 70s after that front passes through Monday night. Severe weather is possible with this system, and meteorologists say the storms could bring gusty winds, large hail and downpours that could cause flash flooding in low-lying locations.

The chance for storms lingers through Monday, but sunny skies return Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures in the middle 70s.
