Metro-North customers on the New Haven line may experience delays up to 15 minutes during the evening rush after a water main break sent water cascading onto the tracks in Mount Vernon Wednesday.
Chopper 4, first over the scene at South and New Haven Railroad streets Wednesday afternoon, showed water spilling heavily onto the tracks below.
Mount Vernon Water Commissioner John Arena said aging infrastructure may be to blame for the pipe bursting.
Trains at first cut through the sheets of water as they traveled on the tracks; shortly afterward, the MTA took track no. 4 is out of service and had trains operating at reduced speed on the three remaining tracks while dispatching a track crew to the scene.
Arena said at the scene that crews were able to isolate the two valves on the street and stop the water from gushing onto the tracks, but it's not clear when they'll be able to repair the pipes because the sidewalk over the tracks appeared dangerous.
