Water Main Break Floods Hoboken, Leaves Homes Without Water

A large water main break flooded parts of Hoboken Sunday and left most of the city without potable water for much of the day.

The break was at the southwest edge of the city, and Hoboken police Chief Ken Ferrante asked anyone entering or leaving the city to do so from the north end.

Most of the city was without water for several hours, Ferrante said. Many residents took to social media to share images of flooded streets.

Tanker trucks filled with drinking water were stationed at three locations in the city.

Crews worked to fix the broken valve throughout the morning, and water pressure  was beginning to be restored at about 3 p.m., said Joel Mestre, the city's deputy coordinator of emergency management. Full service was expected to be restored by Monday.

SUEZ Water North Jersey asked residents to boil water for at least one minute before consuming it. Water does not need to be boiled for showering, washing dishes or clothes, the company said.

All schools in the city were open Monday.
