LES Water Main Break Forces Street Closures

Several streets are closed and a city bus is being diverted at this time.

A water main break at a busy Lower East Side intersection forced the closure of several streets and caused some commuting problems Tuesday morning.

The main at Delancey Street and Bowery ruptured just before 7 a.m. Crews were still working to repair it more than two hours later.

Authorities shut off water to businesses in the area to make repairs. It wasn't known when the water would be turned back on.

As of 8:30 a.m., the break forced several transit changes, including:

  • Delancey closed between Elizabeth and Chrystie

  • Bowery closed between Broome and Houston

  • M103 bus is being diverted

The cause of the break was not known. Officials are working to determine the extent of the damage. At least one business has a flooded basement.

The water main dates back to 1906.
