Man Shoots Girlfriend, Her Daughter in Long Island Murder-Suicide: Police

A man shot and killed his girlfriend and her 17-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself Sunday night on Long Island, police say.

Tanya Lawrence, 43, and her 17-year-old daughter, Danielle, were killed Sunday inside their house in Wading River by 44-year-old Thomas Calhoun, who police say killed himself.

Neighbor Pieter Williams was watching TV with friends across the street when they heard screaming.

"It was terrifying at first," said Williams.

Alex Dudojc said, "We just hear cops screaming, 'get out, get out.."

Police said officers found all three people dead at the home after receiving a 911 call of a gunshot victim there.

It's not clear why Calhoun may have shot Lawrence and her daughter. Danielle's sister, who was also in the house, was unhurt and called 911.

Classmates of Danielle Lawrence at Riverhead High School were stunned. Williams, who was in the same math class, said she was "a nice person. She was great."

Jeremy Simone said, "She would always give a smile to the math teacher if she got something right. She would always help us if we had something wrong with our math problems."

Danielle was active in theater at the school, classmates said.

Abigail Ormandy, who's lived in the Wading River neighborhood for 17 years, vividly remembers the Lawrence family going for walks together and always taking the time to say hello.

"They seemed like an upbeat family, always laughing together," she said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 631-852-6392.
