Police Look for Runaway Driver in Queens Crash

The other driver had to be extricated and taken to the hospital, police say

Police are looking for a driver involved in a vehicle collision in Queens that sent the other driver to the hospital Wednesday with serious injuries.

Police have not released full details of what caused the crash, which left both cars with shattered windows and crushed front ends. They say preliminary reports are that officers were about to make an arrest when the driver of the SUV took off, soon crashing into a gray sedan at 179th Street and 145th Place in Springfield Gardens.

Witnesses said the SUV driver then ran from the scene.

"The guy that was in the other car was injured, he hit his head on car," said Jaynelle Stewart. "But he didn't stop, he kept on going, he ran away, just kept on going."

Emergency workers had to extricate the 55-year-old victim from his car, according to witnesses. He was brought to Jamaica Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Detectives remained on the crash scene for hours to investigate. They were still looking for the driver who fled.
