Vatican Flag Stolen From Manhattan Church Ahead of Pope's Visit: NYPD

The NYPD's hate crimes unit is investigating after a Vatican flag was stolen from a Catholic church in midtown ahead of Pope Francis' historic visit to the city, authorities say.

The flag at Church of St. Agnes near Grand Central Terminal was swiped just hours after it was hoisted Tuesday, according to the NYPD. They say that an American flag was also stolen.

The New York Post reports that the flag stolen Tuesday was actually a replacement for one snatched on Monday.

"It's disgraceful, just disgraceful," a church worker told the Post.

The pope is scheduled to arrive in New York City Thursday afternoon.
