1 Killed, Others Injured When Truck Crashes into Minivan on Montauk Highway: Police

A minivan carrying nine people flipped over on the Montauk Highway when it was hit by a truck Tuesday evening, and one person has died in the crash, Suffolk police say. 

The minivan was going westbound on the highway in Brookhaven at about 5 p.m. when a truck traveling in the opposite direction swerved across the roadway and hit the minivan, police said. 

The minivan flipped over, killing 46-year-old Sandra Leon of Hempstead, according to police. Several others were injured, incluiding the driver of the truck, 28-year-old Gerard Demelfi, and the driver of the van, 37-year-old Nieves Rivera.

The injured were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital. A young boy was critically injured, and all other injuries were non-life threatening.

It's not clear where the minivan was headed. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check and no charges have been filed.
