A Virginia prisoner has admitted raping a 16-year-old girl in New York almost two decades ago.
Alberto Barriera pleaded guilty Wednesday to rape. He admitted attacking the teen as she entered her apartment building in December 1993.
Barriera expects to get 10 to 20 years in prison at an Aug. 17 sentencing. Defense lawyer Ralph Cherchian says Barriera felt the plea was in his best interest.
The Manhattan district attorney's office says a DNA sample taken shortly after the New York attack was matched with Barriera last March.
Virginia authorities had entered his genetic profile in a national system after his conviction in a Virginia Beach drug case. The 47-year-old Barriera was sentenced there last year to about seven years in prison.
