An upstate New York man was shot and killed by police at the scene where a 6-year-old boy was shot prior to their arrival, authorities said Tuesday.

Syracuse police responded Tuesday evening to a report of gunfire on Fenton Street, officials said, and an officer shot an armed man they encountered. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was shot before police arrived and was found inside a house on that street.

The child is in critical condition, Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said.

Police did not specify whether the man shot the child, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.

The child appears to have had a domestic relationship with the man, Buckner said. Neither were identified by police.
