Search Ends for Westchester Teen Missing off Hawaii

The Hawaii County Fire Department concluded its search at sundown Monday with no trace of 15-year-old Tyler Madoff

The search has ended for a New York teen swept out to sea in Hawaii.

The Hawaii County Fire Department concluded its search at sundown Monday with no trace of 15-year-old Tyler Madoff. The teen from White Plains, N.Y., was hiking with a teen adventure tour on the west coast of the Big Island last week when waves washed him away.

Battalion Chief Steve Loyola says the surf subsided Monday, allowing crews to search underwater caves.

Colorado-based Bold Earth Teen Adventures organized the tour, with guides from Hawaii Pack and Paddle.

Hawaii Pack and Paddle has a permit to take kayaks to a specific spot at Kealakekua Bay and hike a trail. Hawaii officials say the tide pool area Tyler was swept from falls outside the permitted area.
