Authorities say two boys escaped from a youth detention center and eventually led police on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle that crashed into a utility pole.

The chase began around 2:25 a.m. Tuesday in Cedar Grove, when an officer tried to stop the vehicle carrying a 17-year-old Newark boy and a 13-year-old from Camden. The vehicle briefly pulled over, but the driver sped away as the officer got out of his cruiser.

The crash occurred a short time later and the two youths fled. The 13-year-old was soon captured at a nearby home, but the older teen remains at large.

The teens escaped early Sunday from the Green Residential Community Home, which is on the grounds of Ringwood state park. The center for nonviolent offenders houses up to 20 residents between ages 13 and 18.
