Accused Turnstile Jumper Packed a .357 Magnum, Cops Say

New York City police said Sunday that a search of a subway turnstile jumper revealed that the man was packing a loaded .357 Magnum revolver.

Two plain clothes officers spotted a man as he stepped over the turnstile Saturday at the Nostrand Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, police said.

The officers stopped the man and performed a check for outstanding warrants, which revealed that he was a "transit recidivist" and should be taken into custody. The man, identified as Coleman Reader, 40, of the Bronx, was handcuffed and searched.

The officers found a loaded, silver Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum in Reader's crotch area, police said.

The gun contained four rounds, one of which was a hollow-point bullet.

Reader was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, police said. He was also charged with theft of service for hopping over the turnstile.
