Trump Links Golf Course Opens in Bronx

Once considered a long shot, a former landfill in the East Bronx is now a championship course boasting design by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and development by Donald Trump.

"We knew we could get it done," Trump said Tuesday.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz said the site was "literally a dump" before it was made over. Now there are rolling green hills that boast views of the Whitestone Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.

"They'll have fun on it, they'll enjoy it," said Nicklaus.

But neighbors wondered who, exactly, would be enjoying the brand-new course. At the Throgs Neck Houses, a public housing project just a half-mile away, residents said the neighborhood needs help and wanted to know where the job opportunities were.

"If' you've gonna have a golf course, you should have residents nearby working," said Ezekiel Ospiina.

And others in the area would like a lower price than the nearly $200 to play. Eric Rivera said he understands the course has just opened and wants to be patient, but is hopeful that "once it starts bringing in money, maybe he'll drop the price."

Darrell Wilder lived nearby for 35 years.

"I would hope that was in the plan when they built this thing, that it would serve the community," he said.

Trump and Diaz promised more opportunities.

"We want to hire people from the area, we have some 60 percent of the people who work here come from our borough," they said.
