Trucker Busted at Bridge on Staten Island, Owes $13,600 in Unpaid Tolls and Fines: Police

The arresting officer said the trucker also was driving with a suspended license

A trucker stopped for evading a toll on a bridge connecting New Jersey to Staten Island owes more than $13,600 in unpaid tolls and fines, Port Authority police said Thursday.

An officer stopped a white tractor trailer at about 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Staten Island toll plaza of the Goethals Bridge when he noticed that the truck's front license plate was bent upward and unreadable, authorities said.

The officer ran a check and discovered the driver owes more than $13.600 in tolls and fines. More than 70 of the suspected toll violations occurred on Staten Island crossings.

The trucker, Melvin Ralph, 44, of Millville, New Jersey, also was driving with a suspended license, the office learned.

Ralph was charged with larceny and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The officer impounded the tractor trailer.

There was no indication that Ralph had obtained a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
