Trucker Covered Up License Plates, Evaded Tolls on George Washington Bridge: Police

A tractor-trailer driver who allegedly altered his license plates was arrested by Port Authority police after an officer saw him go through an E-ZPass lane on the George Washington Bridge without paying, officials say.

The 33-year-old driver from Washington state was seen going through an E-ZPass lane in his 2007 Freightliner truck, according to Port Authority police.

When the officer pulled him over, he saw that the front and back license plates on the truck had been smeared with grease to cover up the characters on the plate so that toll booth cameras would not be able to identify the truck or driver.

The suspect was arrested on charges of theft of service and tampering.
