Truck Crash Upstate Ignites Illegal Fireworks: Cops

A truck driver caused a fiery crash that ignited a warehouse full of illegal fireworks, according to authorities in upstate New York.

The crash happened Tuesday on Route 9W in Ulster County.

Police said a dump truck driven by 55-year-old Jeffrey Kays made an illegal U-turn and was hit by a fuel truck.

Both drivers got out of their vehicles before the fuel truck exploded. But a nearby warehouse owned by a sign company called Ande Rooney caught fire.

The county sheriff's office said illegal fireworks stored in the warehouse exploded.

Kays was charged with reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed driving.

The company was charged with unlawfully dealing fireworks. The firm's lawyer, Thomas Petro, did not return a call Saturday.
