Truck Carrying Over 5,000 Chickens Rolls Over on Connecticut Highway

A tractor-trailer carrying thousands of live chickens hit a barrier and rolled over on a Connecticut highway Saturday morning, state police said.

The truck was traveling east on I-84 when it merged into the right shoulder and struck a cement barrier near exit 11, causing it to overturn.

The truck was carrying more than 5,000 live chickens and ducks at the time, according to police. Containers toppled onto the road and some of the birds appeared to be lifeless as they lied on the concrete.

Cages and what appeared to be lifeless birds littered the roadway and shoulder.

Minor injuries and a fuel leak were reported, police said.

The Department of Agriculture was called to the scene to help with the birds.

Police said the truck driver was issued a citation for failure to maintain lane.

The lane was closed during the investigation but reopened later in the day.
