Tribeca Residents Say Rooftop Burglar on Prowl

Residents in Tribeca say a burglar is going from rooftop to rooftop to get into homes

Neighbors in Tribeca say they're living in fear of a rooftop burglar who climbs from building to building.

A penthouse at a Reade Street complex was the latest target on Friday night.

But Teri Hagedorn says she has known about what she calls a "crime spree" for months and even confronted a suspect face to face in December.

"Even though he looked like a normal person -- you wouldn't suspect he was doing anything wrong -- you just knew he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," she said.

Hagedorn was home when she heard the man's footsteps on her roof. She and her husband opened the door to the stairway and found the man walking right past them.

"He just said to us that he was just coming across from the neighbors," she said. "We knew that made no sense. You don't come across a neighbor's terrace across another building and go down the stairs."

Several neighbors in Tribeca have reported robberies where someone got into their home through a rooftop door or terrace.

Police said it's not clear if it's the same person or group of people stealing mostly Apple products, cameras and credit cards. Police have been canvassing the area and will look for surveillance footage as part of their investigation.
