Tri-State Faces Steamy Stretch Into Weekend as Heat Breaks Records in Spots Friday

Labor Day may have marked the unofficial end of summer, but steamy temperatures are lingering for at least a little bit longer, breaking records Friday in parts of the tri-state area.

Friday's temperatures climbed into the lower 90s for parts of the tri-state area by early afternoon. The mercury crept up to 93 degrees at LaGuardia Airport, breaking the previous record high of 91 degrees for this day set in 2002. Islip's 90 degrees sent a new record, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, saw temps hit 89 degrees, which tied the record high for the date set in 1959.

Central Park hit 90 by early afternoon, falling shy of the record-high 94 degrees set back in 1915, but the heat index made it feel warmer.

A few isolated thunderstorms were possible in the afternoon and evening, according to Storm Team 4.

Humidity levels have been on the rise through Thursday, and the sticky air will hang around well into Saturday, the last hot day in the stretch. Highs will climb well into the 80s, with high levels of humidity. Most of Saturday looks dry for outdoor plans, Storm Team 4 said.

Showers and thunderstorms will cross the area Saturday night putting an end to the heat and humidity by Sunday. Sunday's weather looks very nice with decreasing humidity, plenty of sunshine, a comfortable breezy, and highs in the lower 80s.
