Construction Worker Dies in Staten Island Trench Collapse

The trench collapsed near Victory Boulevard and Travis Avenue

A construction worker is dead after the wall of a trench collapsed at a Staten Island construction site, police said.

The accident, near Victory Boulevard and Travis Avenue, took place around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police say the 29-year-old worker suffered severe head trauma when he was buried in the collapsed wall. He was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

A spokeswoman for the city Department of Buildings said the department has issued a stop-work order for the site.

The spokeswoman, Ryan FitzGibbon, said the contractor will be cited for violations including working without a permit and failing to shore up the trench.
