Trapped Teens in Inflatable Boat Rescued From Newark Bay

Two teenagers escaped injury when the inflatable boat they were in became stalled overnight in a shipping lane of Newark Bay, Bayonne officials say.

Deputy Police Chief Ralph Scianni told The Jersey Journal of Jersey City that the 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl found the tiny boat along the city shoreline early Friday and launched it in the choppy waters.

But they were soon pulled toward Port Elizabeth by a strong current and ended up not far from an oncoming barge.

They were spotted around 3:30 a.m. when they shined a flashlight from the boat, and city firefighters soon brought them safely to shore.

The drenched, shivering teens -- who didn't have life jackets -- declined medical attention and were turned over to their parents. Scianni said no charges will be filed.
