Traffic Light Pole Falls in Midtown

A traffic light pole smashed onto the ground near the Midtown Tunnel Thursday morning, but it's not clear what caused it to fall.

The Department of Transportation confirms the traffic light fell at East 36th Street and Second Avenue. A spokeswoman says the contractor is installing a temporary signal as the DOT investigates.

There are other operating signal controls at the intersection, the DOT says.

Traffic on Manhattan's East Side has already been exasperating for drivers this week with the United Nations General Assembly underway.
