Tourist Testifies in Trial of Fire Island Police

He remembers being hit. He remembers being punched.

But Sam Gilberd told a jury in the trial of two Fire Island police officers accused of beating him that he blacked out after being kicked in the stomach.

The 36-year-old Manhattan man testified Thursday and Friday.

Prosecutors say the Ocean Beach village police officers beat him after giving him a littering ticket on Aug. 28, 2005.

He says the officers began pummeling him after he kicked the police station door.

The police officers' attorneys insist their clients have done nothing wrong. One defense lawyer said Friday that Gilberd had had at least 12 drinks and shouted curses at the officers. He said he didn't recall but didn't deny it.

Fire Island is a summer resort off Long Island.
