Intense Thunderstorms Cut Power, Destroy Deck in NJ

Nearly 750 homes and businesses remained without electricity Monday morning

Intense thunderstorms ripped through the tri-state area Sunday evening, causing power outages throughout the region and leaving a trail of destruction in New Jersey.

Nearly 750 homes and businesses remained without electricity Monday morning. Jersey Central Power & Light reports 640 customers are without power Monday, most of them in Morris County. Atlantic City Electric has 100 customers without service, mainly in Atlantic County.

The community of Long Branch was particularly hard hit by the severe weather that rolled in ahead of the heat wave.

The powerful winds lifted one family's 1,700 square foot deck over their house and into the yard. The debris destroyed a car and blew out a sky light in their kitchen, they said.

Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider said that his community lost a flagpole in the park due to the powerful winds. One of his city employees reported shutters being torn off of his house.

Other than that, Schneider said he wasn't aware of major damage.
