The most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the New York area are on Long Island: Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County and Sunrise Highway in Suffolk.
In the city, the highest number of pedestrians died on Third Avenue and Broadway -- a total of 10 over two years.
Fifteen pedestrians died on Hempstead Turnpike, and a dozen on Sunrise Highway in Suffolk; Sunrise in Nassau reported another seven deaths.
The grim tally was taken by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a Manhattan-based nonprofit trying to reduce use of cars. It based its rankings on fatal pedestrian accidents between 2005 and 2007.
Ryan Lynch, the group's Long Island coordinator, blames the accidents on the fact that roads are built to move cars as fast as possible through intersections. And that creates what he calls a really hostile environment for pedestrians.
